Overview of Orthodontic Treatment

Types of Orthodontic Treatment

One of the most common orthodontic treatments is braces. Braces are metal or ceramic brackets that are attached to the teeth and connected by wires and rubber bands. Braces apply gentle pressure to gradually move the teeth into the desired position. Braces can treat various orthodontic problems such as crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. Braces are suitable for patients of all ages, and they can improve the function and appearance of your teeth.

Another option for orthodontic treatment is clear/invisible aligners. Aligners are custom-made plastic trays that fit over the teeth and gently shift them into alignment. Aligners are removable, comfortable, and virtually invisible. They are an alternative to braces for patients who want a more discreet treatment option. Aligners can treat mild to moderate orthodontic problems such as crowding, spacing, and minor bite issues. Aligners are usually worn for 20 to 22 hours a day and changed every two weeks.

For some patients, especially children and adolescents, orthodontic treatment may also involve dentofacial growth modification. This is a treatment that aims to influence the growth and development of the jaws and face. It involves using appliances such as headgear, palatal expanders, or functional appliances to correct skeletal imbalances and improve facial harmony. Dentofacial growth modification can prevent or reduce the need for more complex treatments in the future.

Surgical Orthodontic Treatment is a type of treatment that aims to correct the disharmony between the jaw bones, to provide an optimal relationship between the teeth, the jawbones, and the facial soft tissues. In this treatment the orthodontist and the surgeon collaborate in an interdisciplinary way to achieve the best possible treatment result.

Adjusting to your braces

Adjusting to orthodontic treatment may take some time and patience. Here are some tips to help you transition with the changes:

  • Expect some soreness and discomfort for the first few days after getting your braces or aligners. You can take over-the-counter painkillers or use ice packs to ease the pain. You can also rinse your mouth with warm salt water or use dental wax to protect your cheeks and lips from irritation.

  • Eat soft foods that are easy to chew and avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage your appliances or get stuck in them. Cut your food into small pieces and chew slowly and carefully.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and pay extra attention to the areas around your appliances. You can also use an interdental brush or a water flosser to clean between your teeth and braces.

  • Wear your aligners as instructed by your dentist and only remove them when eating, drinking, brushing, or flossing. Clean your aligners with a soft toothbrush and mild soap every time you take them out and rinse them before putting them back in. Do not use hot water or abrasive products to clean your aligners as they can warp or damage them.

  • Follow the instructions given by your dentist regarding any additional appliances such as elastics, headgear, or retainers. These devices are essential for achieving optimal results and maintaining them in the long term.
